Almost home

It's that time of year again, when the kitchens and their cooks are creating delicious masterpieces, and family abounds -- it is truly one of the greatest times. As I watch Thanksgiving quickly approaching with the knowledge that I won't partake in it this year, my heart breaks not only for the family I'll be missing, but the food journey that we'd have taken together. It's hard to believe that somewhere thousands and thousands of miles away my family is still out there, still just the same, still living their lives and appreciating each other, and in a few short days' time, cooking to their heart's content a meal that I will not be able to share.

But I prefer to look into the weeks beyond that, towards a happier time when I have returned, and my world has righted itself once more. Dreams of gingerbread houses and multi-course meals float freely through my mind, reminding me of years past and the memories they've created. This year, a certain special someone will be joining the ranks, getting his hands dirty in the kitchen, and becoming more a part of my family than I've ever invited another to do. What a happy time it is to be! Uniting all those that I love more than life itself, sharing time with the people who know me best, and creating some of the world's sweetest dishes.

Australia's been the ride of a lifetime, but I just hope it lands me right back where I belong: home.
